De Soto Students who plan to continue their education after graduation should consider applying for local scholarships and others which may be listed below.  In order to be considered for local scholarships, students must organize and submit a SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PACKET which includes:
  • a completed APPLICATION FORM -  Download and complete this form which requires Acrobat Reader to view.
  • an AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY -  Use a word processor to prepare a profile of yourself.  You may include information about your family, accomplishments, career & educational goals, aspirations, and the contributions you would like to make to society.  Your essay should be one page in length.
  • a RESUME -  Prepare a resume outlining your work or volunteer experience.   You may include information about special talents, school / community activities,  offices held, and other related information.
  • a LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE -  Include a copy of the letter of acceptance from a post-secondary school.
  • a TRANSCRIPT -  Include a copy of your high school transcript showing 7 semesters of courses and grades earned.
  • any LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION -  Include copies of any letters of recommendation you receive.

 

Your applications materials should be arranged in the sequence above in a folder format.  Completed scholarship application packets are due to Mrs. Kilburg no later than April 01, 2010.

Scholarship and Award Opportunities

Vernon Electric Cooperative will award one $750 scholarship to a graduating senior at De Soto High School.  They will be having a random drawing for each school and if your name is drawn, you will be awarded the scholarship.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Application Deadline: March 20, 2010. 

Best Buy is offering one thousand $1,000 scholarships to 9-12 students living in the U.S.  Students need solid grades and volunteer service or work experience.  Apply online at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships or www.at15.comApplication Deadline: February 15, 2010.   

Marine Credit Union is offering five $500 scholarships to well deserving, hard-working students.  To be eligible, students must be a MCU member or the child of a MCU member.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Application Deadline: February 26, 2010.    

The Wisconsin Society for Clinical Laboratory Science is offering one $4000 scholarship to a graduating senior planning to major in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science.  Application materials are available in the guidance office.  Application Deadline: March 1, 2010.    

The American Cancer Society is offering a limited number of scholarships to students who have been diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21.  Applications are available online at www.cancer.org/mwyouthscholarshipApplication Deadline: March 15, 2010. 

Kwik Trip Community Scholarships will be awarded through approximately 300 selected high schools in the communities where a Kwik Trip/Kwik Star store is located.  Kwik Trip, Inc. will make one $500 scholarship available at De Soto High School.  Applicants must be accepted to an institution of higher education, have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher, exhibit good service to others through school and extracurricular activities, and demonstrate a proper and positive attitude.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Application Deadline: March 15, 2010 (please turn applications in to Mrs. Kilburg by this date).   

Western Technical College is offering various scholarships to new freshman for the fall of 2010.  Additional information and application are available online at www.westerntc.edu/scholarships.  If you plan to attend WTC next year, you should fill out a scholarship application.  

The AXA Foundation, in association with U.S. News & World Report, is offering the AXA Achievement Scholarship.  Awards winners are known as AXA Achievers.  They are students who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive, determination and ability to succeed in college and who have respect for self, family, and community.  Additional information and applications are available online at www.axa-achievement.comApplication Deadline: February 15, 2010.

Vernon Telephone Cooperative will be offering scholarships for 2010 high school graduates or others interested in continuing their education, either at a technical college or a university college.  The applicant or parent must be a Vernon Telephone customer.  Applications are available online at www.vernontel.comApplication Deadline: February 12, 2010.   

The Better Business Bureau Foundation will be offering a $2,500 scholarship to a Wisconsin high school student who has demonstrated character, leadership, and ethical values.  Applications are available at www.wisconsin.bbb.org/scholarshipApplication Deadline: May 1, 2010.  

The Peoples State Bank is offering a $500 scholarship to any De Soto High School Senior (you and your parents do not have to bank at Peoples State Bank to be eligible). All seniors should apply for this scholarship!! Complete the application online at www.peoplesfinancial.com (click on “Success”). Application Deadline: February 15, 2010. 

The Wisconsin Professional Police Association is offering scholarships to Wisconsin students enrolling in a course of study leading to a degree in police science or criminal justice.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Application Deadline:    February 1, 2010.    

Badgerland Financial is proud to offer up to twenty $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are pursuing their interest and studies in an agricultural-related field at a short-course, technical school, or college.  Applications are available online at www.badgerlandfinancial.comApplication Deadline: Postmarked by March 1, 2010. 

The Wisconsin Education Association Council is offering a $1450 per year ($5800 overall) scholarship.  In order to qualify a student must be the child of a parent who is an active WEAC member, the child of an active retired member, or the child of a parent who died while holding WEAC membership.  Applications are available online at www.weac.org under the Members Only section.  Application Deadline: February 20, 2010.      

US Bank is offering 40 $1,000 scholarships to college-bound high school students.  Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random drawing process.  Students can apply online at www.usbank.com/studentloansApplication Deadline: February 28, 2010.    

The UW-La Crosse Foundation if offering various scholarships to students who plan to attend UW-La Crosse in 2010-2011.  Specific information and applications are available online at www.foundation.uwlax.edu or in the guidance office.  Application Deadline: Postmarked on or before February 15, 2010.    

The UW-Platteville Foundation will be offering scholarships to students accepted to UW-Platteville for the 2010-2011 school year via mail.  All UW-P scholarships are categorized by each academic college and are available to review on the Financial Aid website at http://www.uwplatt.edu/finaid/scholarships.htmlApplication Deadline: January 12, 2010.

UW-Platteville is offering a $100 scholarship to a De Soto High School senior planning to attend their college in the fall of 2010.  Additional information, including the application, is available online at www.uwplatt.edu/foundation/csp/index.htmlApplication Deadline: March 1, 2010.

Couleecap, Inc. is offering four $200 scholarships.  One scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior in each county their service area.  The students must reside in Crawford, La Crosse, Monroe, or Vernon County.  These seniors must be interested in careers in a human services field.  Applications are available in the guidance office or online at www.couleecap.orgApplication Deadline: February 12, 2010. 

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc. is offering $1,500 scholarships to four Wisconsin high school seniors who plan to continue their education at an accredited school following graduation.  All students are eligible; applicants do not need to be descendants of a Vietnam Veteran.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  Application Deadline: January 16, 2010.   

The Washington Crossing Foundation is offering various scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $7,500.  Additional information is available online at www.gwcf.org.   Application Deadline: January 15, 2010.
