May 12: Dinosaur Fossils

5-12-20 Dinosaur Fossils

Dinosaur Week! Tuesday, May 12th Art Challenge

How do we know so much about dinosaurs? People dig up fossils. National Geographic defines fossils as: "the preserved remains, or traces of remains, of ancient organisms. Fossils are not the remains of the organism itself! They are rocks. A fossil can preserve an entire organism or just part of one. Bones, shells, feathers, and leaves can all become fossils."

Click here to visit the Museum of Natural History and see fossils on display. Some are the HUGE skeletons of dinosaurs. Decide what kind of fossil you want to make. You'll need some clay or play doh. Mrs. Buchner made Sue which is a T-Rex on display at the Chicago Field Museum.

Challenge: Take a virtual field trip to a museum and then create a dinosaur fossil.

Salt Clay Recipe

1 CUP Flour 1 CUP Salt 1/2 Cup water

Mix ingredients together until soft ball forms. If too crumbly add more water.

While you are at home you can still share your artwork with Mrs. Buchner! Here's a quick and easy way to do it:

  • Ask Mom or Dad to take a picture with their phone.

  • Text the picture to Email 1 or Email 2. Yes, you can text to an e-mail. (Of course you can also e-mail it). I will be sharing art from kids on my web site.

  • You can also follow my Facebook page and share there. Facebook Page
