Stoddard Elementary PTO received a Shape America grant to help students adjust to cellphone‑free
classrooms in a positive way — and to strengthen social connection during the school day. Kids
need real things to do during downtime, so most of the funding is going toward hands‑on options like
board games, card games, STEM supplies, and activities that spark conversation and social
interaction. Instead of filling quiet moments scrolling on screens, students get chances to play
together, build friendships, and feel connected.
We’re also sharing media literacy resources with parents and school staff so kids learn to think
carefully about what they see online and make safer, healthier choices. Our goal is simple: help
students feel more focused and more socially connected at school — and give families tools that
make navigating technology a little easier at home too.

📓You could make one of these! Our Handmade Books & Journals Workshop is coming up, and there’s still time to grab a spot. This beginner-friendly class includes all materials and hands-on instruction from art teacher Carissa Brudos.

Each week, we're featuring a staff member to help you get to know the amazing people who make De Soto school district such a special place.
This week, Arthur Mendoza, 6th - 12th grade Spanish Teacher.
🏴☠️ Arthur has been teaching here since 2021.
🏴☠️ He grew up in Lima, Peru.
🏴☠️ His wife is from Viroqua, but they met in Peru in 2006. They lived in Lima until they moved to Wisconsin in 2021. They have two children that attend Prairie View.
🏴☠️He enjoys listening to music and playing electric guitar.
🏴☠️A fun fact about Arthur, at first, several students, and even one of the bus drivers, thought he was an exchange student.
🏴☠️When asked what excites him most about De Soto Arthur says, "What I like most is that the school is not in a big city. I also enjoy being able to teach both middle and high school, since it gives me the opportunity to teach students for several years, some of them even from 6th grade until they graduate, and to see their growth and progress throughout that entire time."
